Vatican Museum and St Peter's Basilica

Endless artifacts, statues, paintings, all plundered at the height of Rome's power. The opulance and riches is amazing. The guide book gets it right when it questions whether the designers of St Peter's had heard that the meek will inherit the earth. The Vatican Museum seemed endless, and everything was amazing - you could have spent weeks in there. and imagined the weeks, months, years that people spent creating all these masterpieces.

A great place to spend a rainy day - and that was what we had - pretty much every day in Rome. Cal and Sal loved running round on the marble floors of St Peter's, until they got in a bit of trouble (or we did on their behalf) for playing in a sacred place.
